Hello All!

I plan to reload for a .223 and a .308 rifle. I shoot 100-200Y, what is a good size, brand and starting load for a .223 bullet? A .308 bullet?

Steve,
You may want to include what twist rate you will be using in order to help guide your bullet selection.
I have found good luck with varget 25.5gr and a 69gr sierra BTHP for my 1:9 twist savage.
I have also used 23.5gr N133 and a 52gr sierra BTHP in the same barrel with good success.

The twist rate on my .223 is 1 in 9, and on my .308 is about 1 in 11

I thought BT bullets shouldn't be used in 100-200Y.

Factory competition BR.

Both are rem 700, the 223 is s vtr and the .308 has a 5R rifling barrel, and I don't know the model.

100-200 Yards

I have heard of many shooters using and winning with boat tails in their PPC's and many using flat base bullets. I don't think it would be correct in saying "shouldn't", but maybe "not used quite as often as flat base bullets" and even then that may not be entirely accurate.
The best answer truly is what shoots best in your gun. Buy a couple different types, look up some charts for the available powder that you have and go to it.
www.accurateshooter.com has a table for each of these calibers and may be able to direct you to a load more quickly

Thanks Mike!

Hope to be at some of your matches next season. I know Bob went up there to shoot the match with the bbq. I bought a very good 6ppc custom from him, ready to do battle with it.

shoot the lightest that will ag well.....br quality is tuff to beat with production bullets...there have been exceptions...

try some 52/55 in the 223 and 125/135 in the 308

Thanks Mike,

I will be reloading, but I would like to get a size that my rifles like and go from there.

I look forward to seeing you when you are able to make it up. I am hoping that Bob and I can make our CT vs NJ matches an annual event as I know that all the guys that participated had a great time.
Are you planning on shooting all 3 guns or testing to see which factory gun shoots best and then go with a factory and LV PPC rig? I am sure that you will be happy with the gun that you bought from Bob, and once you get things settled with regard to bullet/powder choices then the learning really begins.
We are hoping to have our first state championship next July. If you are able you should try to make it and meet some of the better shooters in our game (score that is) and really increase the learning curve.

Mike,

Right now it's looking like the .308 shoots better, and with the larger bullet would be more appropriate for factory (score). For the VFS, I plan to use the rifle I bought from Bob, even though it's still score.

I hope to make it up there as well, and I'll check the schedule as we get closer to season.

Steve

PS. I shot my .223 today, and I think it likes the 68gr bullet. The jury's still out on the .308

Steve,
my pet 223 factory BR load, works in 5 different rifles:
Lapua Brass
Fowler 52 gr FB Match bullet from Bill Schieder
24.8 gr of Vithv N-133
Rem 7 1/2 or Fed GM 205 primer
seat'em deep(about 0.030-0.060 jump)

the wind is my friend,,,,,,,,,,,,,
