Hey guys! Im new to this forum and it was suggested that the best place to find the answer to my question was on this forum.I have a Howa 1500 heavy barrel in 243 and im quite familiar with the round robin method of ladder testing for long range shooting.I would like to know how do benchrest shooters set up their rifles to shoot such small groups at 300 yards.I normally set my rifles to shoot 2 inch high at 100 meters but that is just because i dont really know how to set up at 300 yards as from what i understand you cannot use the round robin method of ladder testing because of the short range involved.Ladder testing is normally done at around 500 yards.

can somebody please educate me on how you benchrest guys set up at short range and how on earth do yourll shoot such small groups at such long ranges.Im not asking to give out your secrets, just a little tip would be nice. I love shooting and am intrigued at long range shooting but here in South Africa shooting accesories such as bullets etc are so damn expensive that we cannot afford to shoot alot so any help in learning the best and most efficient method would be really appreciated.

Thanks in advance.

Paul do I use the straight ladder method at 300 meters and work from there or is there any particular range you would recommend?

But do your load development at 100. Less external factors. If it shoots its best at 100 itll show the external variables at 300. Move your scope to hit where you want. No reason to have it hit high dial it in at the yardage youre shooting.

Thanks for the info gentlemen.I'll try my best to get things sorted out.I'll do my load developements at 100 as you suggested dusty and try to shoot at 300 as paul suggested and hopefully fine tune in for 300.I normally load 3 rounds of each powder charge goin up .5gn increments and use the charge that groups best at 100 yards so I'm assuming that's you mean Dusty.I don't think the ladder method would work at 100 yard,it might be too close for vertical dispersion.

Don't wear the barrel out at 300 when you can get your answers at 100 under good flags……… If it doesn't shoot small at 100 it sure won't at 300 with the conditions……. jim

Point taken Jim.will set up at 100.just got myself a box of 100gn hornady interlock boat tails, hope they perform well.

Not Benchrest - 243 Winchester

My Rem. 40X likes Berger 68 gr fb bullets with IMR4350. The Berger 90gr hpbt match likes IMR 4831. Win. brass neck turned, sorted by weight to 3/10 gr, flash hole deburred , CCI BR2 primers. Redding FL sizing Bushing type S die. Control shoulder bump when sizing. About 2/1000 neck tension. Seating die is standard RCBS. 36 power scope. After working up loads at 100 yds, shot out to 300 yds 1 time.(to far to walk) Shot 3- 5 shot groups with each bullet/load, total of 6 groups. Had 3 groups just under 1" Use wind flags. I like to shoot when its overcast, no sun and zero wind. This rifle would have did better when new in 1976, i think?? Old now like me. The throat is shot out now. Brass has 18 loadings on it. Last time i shot it, Aug 2010. To shoot BenchRest groups, you need benchrest equipment, not what i have. Homemade flags for 25 & 65 yds. The wind closest to the muzzle is what i worry about. :D

I also prefer the ladder method, makes perfect sense and if it can work for benchrest guys when they are setting up for long distance then I'm sure it will help us as long as you understand the concept.
