Ran into a Rem. 700 in 300 ultra mag at a yard sell . Supposedly NIB . With Bushnell Legend scope 5x16x40 . They are asking 700.00 , is this a good price and I don't know much about the 1Magnums , always been a 30-06 or 308 fan , is this a good caliber accuracy wise ? I assume as with most magnums , barrel wear would be accelerated ? If so , how many rds would it take for accuracy to suffer ? Thanks , Kenneth

You didn't say what model, barrel weight, or if it's CM or stainless. the price sounds reasonable but not a "too good to pass up" deal. If you're used to 308 recoil you will find it has considerably more.. 308 case capacity is 54 grains vs 112.5 for the 300 RUM. Accuracy is likely to suffer after about 3 shots. That will be from your shoulder complaining, not barrel wear. The rifle should be good for around 1500 - 2000 shots for reasonable hunting accuracy. The 300 RUM is less of a barrel burner than a 264 Win mag or a 30-378 Weatherby. I own three 300 RUM 700s. one a factory 26" BDL sporter which to me has unpleasant enough recoil I've only fired five shots to zero it's scope. . One has a medium Palma 30x13T Pacnor barrel with a brake (11 lbs) for light bullets and a fairly flat trajectory to 350 yards, and one with a 30" x 9T Hart heavy barrel for VLD bullets with a supersonic range of over a mile with Berger 210s. The latter two are tolerable to shoot, I've put less than 50 shots though either of them. I doubt I'll ever wear them out. The 300 Rem Ultra cartridge has pretty good inherent accuracy if used with suitable bullets and if you can shoot it without flinching. Yours will probably last a lifetime of large game hunting. For shooting practice and deer or smaller game i expect you'll still choose the 308 or 30-06.

I think it sounds like a bit to much money, but im a wheeler dealer and i very rarely pay new prices for anything. Its part of the excitment for me. Not to mention its how i afford to shoot. Im raising two girls so i have to find those deals! I think you can get a new rem 700 varmint sps for 525. Just not sure it will be in the chambering. I do know they make it in some of the larger cals though. Look around for a day or so, and you will come up with a better deal i am sure! Good luck friend!! Lee

I found a couple rem 700 sps in 300 win one in a 300wsm and one in a 300RUM for 550. I also found a stainless sps rem 700 in 300 win for 650. the deals are out there! Lee

Thanks for the replies , it was indeed an sps , and I,m glad I passed . I hope to one day go north and hunt the big game , but as stated , I looked and looked at the gun knowing I would replace the scope and decided it was to much caliber for hunting in Va Along with a hefty price for ammo or powder . Thank you , Kenneth
