I have a .300 and am trying to dercide what I want to shoot for hunting. I am torn between two weights for my loaD AND AM TRYIN G TO SEE WHAT VELS ARE GENERALLY OBTAINABLE WITH BOTH 180 GR AND 200 GR. aNYBODY ELSE SHOOTING THESE BULLET WEIGHTS? aLL MY LOAD BOOKS ARE IN STORAGE AND JUST TRYing to get some ideas what to expect...thanks, sorry for caps

What are you going to be hunting? Depending on the bullets you plan to use 180's will work on everything from deer to elk sized game. If you're going after larger game like moose the 200's might be better. It all depends on what you might be hunting.

300 h&h

I looked in the Nosler #6 manual (24" barrel, 1:10 twist) and a 180 gr bullet will go 3,000+ fps, but the accuracy load is 2,820 fps with 62.0 grs IMR4831. The 200 gr will go 2,800+ fps and the accuracy load is 2,791 fps with 67.0 grs (MAXIMUM LOAD) of H4831SC.

A shooting buddy inherited a 300 H&H from his dad, but we haven't shot it yet. He said his dad could really put down an elk with it. nhk

Now a days

I have found the Barnes TSX to give outstanding accuracy (they need to be seated about .050 off the lands and sometimes more)

Given any 30 caliber chambering including the old 300 H&H I would use the 165 TSX's. In the days before the TSX's I would have recommended a 180 grain Partition.

Remember the 165 gr. TSX is long for its given weight and will retain more weight than the 180 gr. Partition once it goes to work.

BTW I harvested a nice cow this year with one shot using a .308 and a 165 Sierra SBT and had a complete pass through at 200 yards.

For anything elk or smaller...I use a Sierra 165 HPBT Game King, 69.5 gr. IMR 4350 and Fed 215. (this is not a recommendation for a load, it is what I shoot in my Mod 70 Win AND IS SAFE, FASTAND ACCURATE IN THAT RIFLE... YOUR MILEAGE MAY VARY!)
I have never found a 180 gr that would compare in any form or fashion to that load.

Curly,

3000 fps. is within reach of 180's and original recipe H-4831 in a 26" M-70.

Works good on Elk!!!

Good shooting.;)

If you decide you don't like the 300 H-H you can run a 300 Weatherby reamer in your existing chamber and get a 300 Weatherby which will love the 200 grain bullets.
M local gunsmith uses a 300 H-H reamer to start with on all of his 300 Weatherby's.

300 Weatherby=more powder, more noise, more recoil for not a whole lot more PRACTICAL effect on game animals. The 300 H&H is a time-tested performer on big game. I would not consider converting mine to anything else. It too loves 200 grain bullets which performed well for me on 7 moose. All very dead.

I bet your rifle would really make 165 gr. .308 bullets hummmmmm!

I liked the comment encouraging the 165's.

Heavier bullets add to recoil, which would be substantial in any event.

I wish I had a 300 H&H. You lucky devil!
