Was wondering why you don't hear of the 30-06 as a competetive cartridge ? Accuracy , barrel life ? A favorite cartridge of mine and was wondering why it seemed to be left out . Thank you , Kenneth

You don't hear about the 30-06 as a competitive cartridge because you're visiting the wrong sites and forums. The 30-06 (Cal .30) was THE National Match cartridge from 1908 until 1968, and the International and Palma cartridge for an even longer period. It was replaced by the 308W (7.62mm) because the 308 was more efficient, easier to handload, and could be accomodated in a lighter platform. But, there ain't no flies on the '06.

Thanks

Thank you for the input . Both of you . It was a very interesting site . I am going to contact them to see what an RT-10 will cost . If its not priced out of this world I may opt it over a Cooper rifle I was considering . I like the ar platform , have a few in 223 , and would love one in a 30-06 platform . Again thanks , Kenneth

When I worked at Lake City we ran a 308 fmj round headstamped match and a 308 175gr. hollow point round headstamped N. M. national match. I dont know what was shot where but some of it went to camp perry. I never ran any .30 cal. all .762.

The last M72 (Cal .30) National Match ammunition was manufactured by LC in 1968. The 7.62mm NATO National Match ammunition that suceeded the Cal .30 was the M118 with the 173 grain fmj from 1963 until 1982, and the M852 with the 168 grain SMK from 1981 until 1996.

The M852 was the last true National Match ammunition manufactured. The current sniper/competition/tactical cartridge is the M118LR which is loaded with the 175 grain SMK. Today, virtually all competitors at the National Matches use handloads or commercial match ammunition.

Cheech, All I did was taper the cases. We tried to get the neck concentricity to zero and the length to shoulder better than the average ball round bot thats about all the case had to do with it on taper. I remember the M118 stuff I think they called it special ball. After it went to priming it was outa my area so I didnt get to see it shoot. Always wanted that job though, gunner, test firing ammo for function and groups. I didnt have enough whiskers to get that job.

It must have been an intersting job working in an ammunition plant.

The M118 SB (Special Ball) was the sniper round between 1982 and 1993. Most everyone who had to use it did not like it, especially the USMC. It led to the design of the 175 grain SMK and the M118 LR (Long Range) cartridge that LC still loads today.

Yeah Ray it was interesting. Especially for a gun nut. I worked there from 82 to 94. Wonder what the marines didnt like about it? They used to buy those 175s from Sierra. They started running that long range about the time I left. I dont know how the long range is different than the special ball but I would think you could only get so much out of a 7.62 anyway. But I m no engineer.

The USMC thought that the NM and SB was for sissies. Weapons battalions such as Quantico got new brass from LC and loaded their own. I have 6 boxes of that stuff, called G4. I chronographed it at 2800 fps. That is some hot ammo. It will rattle an M14. They tried to get the Army to adopt something similar for snipers but eventually got tired of waiting for the slow wheels of bureaucracy. They used USN Special Ops funding and created their own cartridge with the 175 grain Sierra but at a lower velocity of 2700 fps. When the Army adopted it as the M118LR they down-loaded it back to 2600.

Here's a box of the USMC ammo that they developed with Special Ops funding. Have you ever seen these? The label calls it SB but it's really a hot loaded LR.

Ray, Id say that 95 behind the LC. was the year it was run. Ive never seen a carton pack with the eagle, globe, and anchor on it. 95 is a year after I got disability so I aint got a clue. The case area was a long ways from packing. Thats where they printed the 20 rd. packs and cans. You would have to work in packing to see that kinda stuff. Sorry for the thread hijack aintright. Im gonna try one of those new mod. 70s in 3006 they oughta shoot bedded action free float barrel. Doug

No bother to me Doug , that sort of thing doesn't upset me . I love to here peoples experiences and knowledge , thank you all for some interesting info . When I wrote this , I guess I should have been more specific . I realized th 06 was used in cmp matches and such , when I wrote left out of competition I was referring to benchrest . I guess after playing with the rimfire bench guns over the years , I have become spoiled to expecting to much maybe ? I just opened my latest edition of P.S. this morning and there was an article in there about the 03A3 , That fellow has one sweet shooting 03 . Thank you all , Kenneth

The riflemans journal link the Charles E referred me too has changed for some reason . I had it in my favorites for some time and when I tried to access it I got a google thing saying it was by invite only . I don't use google , but I created an account just to try accessing the site , it says again , I have no invitation . Anyone know what is going on with that ? Or how to get around it ?
Thank you , Kenneth
