30-06 bullet choice for hunting boar, deer, fox

Was after some opinions on bullet choice, preferably 150gn in a 30-06. My friend wants him to load for him and he wants one load that will do for driven boar in Europe, roe deer and red foxes?! The boar will be close shots nothing in excess of 100 yards, roe deer only have a body weight of approx 50-60 lb. I think was thinking of sticking with Nosler BTs which I have used to shoot many deer and foxes but never boar. Thoughts?

Cheers Rich.K

How large are the boar? I use 180 accubonds for everything out of my '06 here in the US, but my game is 200-300 pounds. Having 50-60 pound deer, that would be a huge overkill and destroy meat.

Is 30-06 the only caliber being considered?

The boar are probably about the 200lb mark. I thought of the accubond, I dont think meat damage should be an issue, just enough expansion? I have shot roe deer with a 300 win mag and never had meat damage, just try and put the bullet in the right place.
30-06 is the only option, not my first choice but it is what he wants

I use 150gr Accubonds and a stiff dose of IMR-4064 with great results.

leftyo,
thanks for the input maty, pelt damage isnt an issue. Just looking for a good, safe kill. The foxes get buried, its pure predator control :)

I am insulted....

:(:(

30-06 RULES....;););)

Not having travelled to England and not knowing how dense/sparse populated the hunting areas are I would stick with a Ballistic tip bullet. The ferocious expansion of them when they hit should almost guarantee no ricochets. Placement needs to be right though to minimize meat damage.

I personally do not shoot Ballistic tips anymore for hunting. I shoot Nosler Partitions for Whitetail, Moose, Bear.

Cheers Calvin, the boar will be in relatively thick woodland - the average shot may be 50 yards? I have dropped some big deer 250lb with NBT tip and have always done the business. Have never shot anything as big as moose or potentially dangerous as bear but would want something guaranteed to hold together too!! Have you tried the accubond?

How does the accubond behave, is there a recoverable bullet on most chest shots or does it punch thru?

I am a big fan of the Sierra 165 gr HPBT Game King in the 30-06 class cartridge. Holds together well and is very accurate.

The Barnes 168gr TTSX is a remarkable all-round bullet.......

Were it ME, I'd load 110-125gr leadcore bullets like BIB's for the foxes. Something about using a 30-06 like a 22-250 just makes me smile! :)

And regarding the cartridge choice...... when any given thing on this earth is SO FRIGGIN' EFFECTIVE that people dis it because it's "uncool", then that one thing is truly cult-status, top-O-Heap, King of The Hill, nuttin' left to be said ......... there are only a few items that have been distilled to this essence

Thanks Al, using a 30-06 like a 22-250 is cool, I use a 300 win mag with 178gn A max. Some of my most memorable shots have been with the 300 win mag on foxes! my longest fox at night was with the 300win mag just over 400 yards), the 2nd longest was with a 270! I agree with your comments on the 30-06, every sport has it fads but some things are always there in the background but never the less are a constant. My only issue with the barnes is cost :(
Lynn, the deer will most likely be high seat shots out to about 150 yards.

I appreciate all the info, thanks chaps :D

I have to agree with Al.

For 30/06s I have had the best luck with 130 grain bullets loaded hot. I have never seen a deer wander off with one of these in him.

For Texas sized White Tail Deer there is nothing better at all unless it is a 22/250. Now if you are going after Elk or Bear you might better get a tougher bullet.

Nice thing about the '06. You can't really go very far wrong on choice of bullets. Your resuts will be pretty good with almost any 150 gr short of hardball.

I have great luck with the 165 grain nosler balistic tip on everything from coyotes to moose with one shot kills with 52 grains of 4064.

Thanks Tate for the info, pleased as I am a huge fan of NBT. I was told Nesika used to use them for accuracy testing, not sure, but I have always found them an awesome bullet
