30-06 best load and bullet for benchrest shooting

Hi guys

Having done most of my benchrest shooting with a Savage .223. I now want to see what I can do with a 30-06 Ruger M77 Mark II. Yes... I know it kicks like a mule, and it's not a "target" rifle. I reload all my own ammo, so I'll be getting the dies and every thing else I'll need.
So... tapping into the VAST knowledge of all you "old" time shooters, What would be the best powder, powder load, primer, bullet, brass, to use, as well as an idea of how much to set it off the lands.

Much thanks

Gina,

If this is a serious post, there's no way anyone can actually help you because Rugers are a quirky thing to begin with and because no matter what you do each rifle is a law unto itself.

BUT, if the Ruger were my choice, I know what I would do. I would start with some 125gr Nosler Ballistic Tips and if I saw promise I'd move on to Berger 110/115/125 gr stuff. THEN, move up to some BIB's or Chisms..... if none of these shoot?

Give up.

If you are talking about shooting BR as in real--competition type BR at 100 to 200 yards that rifle/cartridge combo is so non-competitive as to be--well --the reason you've not gotten many replies.... If you mean that you want to get the best from a .30-06 as shot off a bench, you could do a lot worse than trying a Berger 168 gr match bullet and N-540 powder ignited by a Fed large rifle primer. I have a Win Mod 70 that just loves that setup and shoots well under .7 MOA at 200 yards and on a good day under .5..........this with a 1/10 twist--I have no idea what Ruger carves out of their barrels as far as a twist--I would guess about the same---But---a wise man once said "each rifle is a law unto itself"..................

YES.... this is a serious request. Yes it will be a BR. Laugh at me if you want to, but owning the Ruger, why not try to get the very best out of it I can. Heck, it's not winning the compititions that trips my trigger, but the challange. Who knows what suprises may come out of it.
amamnn, Thanks for the info on the load. It will be awhile till I'm ready to try that load, as I need to get everything for reloading, and as you know takes time and money. In the mean time I will continue to get more knowledge. PS the Ruger has a 1/10 twist also.

Thanks again Gina

if oyu just want to get the best you can out of the rifle, i would start with 168gr sierra match kings, then move on to some of the more spendy custom bullets. for powder in a 30-06 ive always been partial to IMR 4064, but wouldnt try it in competition myself(the cartridge, not the powder).

Gina1,

If you enjoy competing check out our postals @ www.bench-talk.com
its on your own time and we can get you some honest competition.

Steve.... Thanks for responding. Checked out the web site, interesting. I'll sign up for it shortly. BTW where is it located ?? One question though, and with all due respect "what is honest competition" ??
As I said in the orginal post I shoot a Savage .223 12FCV in competition. I won the last match, this past Saturday. There were 15 shooters and my score was 200 11X out of 20 rounds, F-class targets. Yes I am a serious shooter, but it is something that also should be fun. Win or lose I do the best I can, without going too far down the rabbit hole. ($$$$)
So Steve, thank you and the link to bench-talk. :)

As an earlyier post mentioned . 168 gr bullet (match) you pick the brand. 47 gr of 4064, Fed lr primer. Oh the cases, buy 100 of the same brand and lot and case prep them just like the Bench Rest boys do there ppc's.

The statement was meant only in referance to the postal, because it's all you, no one to regulate your shooting, be honest to yourself...trying to be witty, never seems to work through the internet, but hey I tried. As far as the Location, I'm located in the very windy state of South Dakota and that is where you will need to send the targets for scoring, I forward the results to Jason who is in Neb, and he then does all the spreadsheet VOODOO and then he forwards the results for posting to the Owner/operators of www.bench-talk.com who reside in the very wet State of MN.

Thanks again Steve

I was wondering what "postal" was ?? Nice to know now. BTW I'm located near Medford OR. A member of the Medford Rifle and Pistol club. We do our long range shooting at the old camp White (WWII) 600 yard range.I'm sure we don't get your kind of wind, but wind we do get, so reading the wind does come into play.
Thank again
