i have a 260 rem with a e.r.shaw barrel (1:9 twist), h.s.precision stock and timney trigger. i have tried every factory load i can get my hands on and cant get it under 1 1/2 inch groups @ best. 1st question : am i being to picky? 2nd: am i going to have to hand load myself. any suggestions appreciated. i have read that a 1:8 twist is probably best for hunting bullets. any suggestions for specific loads. it seems to like 120 ballistic tips the best if it likes anything at all.
thanks

sorry! i put this post in the wrong forum. help still appreciated

Factory loads are for everybodys gun and rarely produce great accuracy.
Hand loading can get you there if your gun is capable and its fun

I just started reloading for my sako 260, im shooting about .5 groups and still have not found the magic load. Reloading is the only way to group consistant rounds, its also fun if you have the time and a place for it.

As far as wondering the twist rate for hunting, the way I understand it depending on what weight of bullet your looking at shooting you want to have the correct amount of twists in your barrel for the certain size bullet. Here is a link: http://www.nfa.ca/content/view/129/197/
I've only reloaded for 3 years now so im by no means an expert, but hope this info helps.

6.5x55 Shaw barrel

l had 6.5 barrel from Shaw all work done by my smith it
was a one in nine twist, after about one hunderd rounds
this barrel would really shoot, most times five in 3/4 inch at 200.this was with handloads.you must handload to get the
most from any gun,and it's more damn fun than you think.
ln 6 months you will pay for loading gear in your savings
over factory loads.

P.S. The bullets l used were 120 gr. Sierra Match Kings.

H4350 and 123gr. Lapua would be where I would start. You have to hand load most of the time for a 260. GA Percision has a 139 gr. load made by black hills that shoots very well but I don't know if it will stabalize out of a 1 x9 barrel. Mine is a 1x8 barrel.
