Anyone ever use a 25-06 for this game? If so, how does it do?

I think you'll have trouble finding a good quality long range match bullet for a 25. It's not that the 25 couldn't work, it's just there's not any demand for that type of bullet in that caliber. In the literally thousands of guns I've seen fired at 1K over the years, I've never seen a 25 on the line. I know guys used to shoot them many years ago, but times have changed.

You won't see any 270's either (though I have actually seen one of them).

This question has been asked before. There are a few bullets -- the Berger, and for a custom, R.G. Robinett's 110 grain boattail, with a G1 ballistic coefficient of .520. I'm biased, as I'm inordinately fond of any of Randy's bullets. The big thing ordering from Randy is to plan ahead. He's not about to turn his life upside down to make bullets for guys who didn't plan ahead.

Having said that, there is nothing remarkable about a .520 BC bullet. Randy himself makes a 6mm that's a bit slippier. To shoot a .25, you just have to want to do so.

I have shot a .25 at 1,000 yards in the old days when Factory class was allowed. I used the 110 Fowlers, no longer available. Dave Tooley & Jeff Summers bought those dies (Jeff keeps them), and Jeff Summers isn't in the bullet selling business. Anyhow, I beat some 300 Win Mags, and got beat just as often.

As usual, though wrong on a detail, what Phil said is pretty good advice.

Good points Charles, I hadn't even considered the R.R. 25's. Berger made 25s as well, though it's been a long time since I was on their site to see if they still do.

The choices are few, though perhaps there are some good ones. Unfortunately, if yer gun doesn't like the ones that are out there, you're gonna be force feeding em to it anyway.

Course, you never know, somebody might come along and just shoot 'lights out' with a 25. I'd be thinking the 06 case is a bit much for a competitive one. Maybe better suited to a 6.5. But, 300wby's have shot 187's before too, so you just never know.

I don't know about Robinetts bullets but the 108 jlk vld shoot real good at 1000 yards (b.c. .500) they only drop about 240" from 100 yard zero with a muzzle velocity of 3200 fps. The new ones that Swampy makes are just as good as the old ones from jim knox. The b.c. of the 115 Berger is under .500 (however that doesn't mean they won't work).

I shot a 25-06 Sendero in the 1K stock class in Iowa for a couple of years, using Lapua 30-06 necked down and turned with the 115 VLD's and 4831-SC. It dipped into the 4.00's a couple of times, but sold it in favor of one in 7SAUM that proved to be a consistent 1 1/2 MOA gun.........

Maybe I left my brains in my other pants, but if IIRC, 1-1/2 MOA at 1,000 yards is 15 inches. Not very good, even for a factory rifle. On the other hand, 1-1/2 inches would win just about every LG match shot. And 0.5 MOA would be 5 inches, still a contender for a lot of full-blown LG matches at a number of ranges -- I don't remember Iowa as being particularly tame, though the only time I shot there was the 2005 Nationals , , ,

Can you say more?

Charles,

The 7SAUM's best, IIRC, was a 10 incher, followed and preceded, of course, by many larger, so maybe 1 1/2 MOA was generous.

It was a lame attempt at sarcasm, meaning I peddled an honest 1/2 MOA gun for the greener grass of the SAUM.....

I think everybody else has a story like that to tell too. btdt

I shoot several 25 barrels. Now days my barrels include 25 BR, 25 BR Long, +0.030, and the Jon Deer which is similar to an 25 Souper AI.

I have found the 25 BIBs bullets to be very good. I shoot short range with the 25 BR against the guys with the 6 PPC and win as many as I lose. If the wind is tricky I do good. In the calm the 6 PPC guys beat me.

I have used the 25 BR with BIBs 87 gr bullets out to 485 yards. The 25 BR with the BIBs bullest are equal to a Dasher maybe better in tricky wind conditions. My current 25 BR barrel is a Bartlien 29" 1-12 Twist. It shouts most bullets up to and including 100 grs. It did not stabilize the 115 Berger VDL tips.

So I did leave my brains in my other pants -- I didn't get he sarcasm & thought you were recommending the SAUM & had misquoted the results. Now I'm with you. As Phils says, btdt.

I learned a harsh lesson years ago. It was: When you have a good shoot'n gun, but you really have a hanker'n for a new gun. Keep the old good shoot'n one till yer pretty certain the new one is better. Otherwise, you might find it takes a LONG time to get a contrary gun to shoot as good as that old "agreeable" one! :D
