.243 to .260

I have some Lapua .243 brass and a new .260. I'm going to make .260 out of the Lapua. I've fireformed several times but I heard a comment that I think is bull but thought I'd ask. I heard that necking down .308 is "better" than necking up .243. Does this make sense??? V/R Greg
 
243 to 260 works for me

I too used Lapua 243 brass and went up to 260 in a single pass on the K&M. they work well. I have not had any issue. My neck is a very open neck (.296), so it may be different for you.
 
For factory chambers in 25-06 I have always used 30-06 Laupa and necked it down to 25.
 
The only problem I can imagine in necking up a case rather than necking down a case is that necks might end up too thin. If the cases are new there shouldn't be a problem and the difference in neck thickness shouldn't be of any concern going from 6 to 6.5 mm.

I've done it both ways for factory rifles and didn't have to turn necks from .308 to .243 because they were too thick, so doubt that the necks would end up more than a few tenths of a thousandth thinner going up half an mm.
 
.260 resizing

I think I have all the info I need and I thank you all for your time and consideration. I thought maybe someone would say that expansion equals stress; that may be equal to thickness, but I dont think "stretching" .243 will stress brass. Thanks again. This forum never lets me down-well there is an occasional flamer. V/R Greg
 
Fireforming up from .243 to .260 using shotgun powder will give you the longest and pertyest and straightest cases possible but the necks will be thinner than those made from necked down .308.
