Hi,

I am looking for a 223 cal rifle that will sit between my hornet and my 308. I intend to use it for long range hare shooting and up to and including goats.

I would like some opinion on barrel length and twist rates.

I want a bolt action carry rifle with good accuracy and need to keep the wife happy so the top end sako styer aren't an option.

So with a 1:9 twist how fast/light can I go without jackets breaking up? With a 1:9 twist and 20 - 24 inch barrel what kind of velocity will i get with a 60 grain?

If I go with a 1:12 how heavy can I go ?

Is there a chart somewhere ie

1:9 min 50 Grain max 65 grain
1:12 min 35 grain max 55 grain
1:8 min 55 grain max 70 grain

so far i like the remington VTR and the Howa 1500 houge

cheers
Matt

go to 6mmbr site and click on the 223 tab.
I am currently shooting a 1:8 twist broughton 5c f-class taper 30 inch barrel shooting 80 grain bergers behind 24.5 grains of varget with an average of just over 2800 fps.
I am trying to find reloader 17 to try and see if I can get to that next accuracy node.
at 25.5 grains of varget I was close to 3000 fps but accuracy was bad.
You can call any barrel maker and ask them what twist rat for the type bullet / shooting you plan to do and they will hook you up.
