Im building a 220 swift can anyone give me some information.

According to Jim Carmichel the Swift gives good accuracy with flat trajectory, making it a great varmint choice.

Were you asking about components for the rifle or pet loads?

Take Care,

220 Swift

This is the grandaddy of all varmint cartridges. The swift came about in 1935 by necking down the 6mm Lee Navy round to 22 cal. The first to launch a 40 gr round at 4000 fps. Its an extremely accurate round, it has been said that the swift is very hard to load for, but I have found that it is less finicky to load for than my 22.250. It will take light plinking loads down to the 3300 fps range, and will also launch 52 and 55 gr rounds in the 3800 to 3900 range with ease, and still be extremely accurate. The swift lost favor as it got the reputation for being a barrell burner, it had a tendency to eat up the tube farely quickly. This was not the fault of the caliber as much as it was poor cleaning techniques, long strings of extremely hot loads, and a poorer grade of steel used for barrels. Todays steel is much better, and if long strings of hot loads are avoided and proper cleaning, the swifts barrel will last just about as long as any other. As of today there is only 3 ammunition manufacturers who offer rounds for the swift. Federal, Hornady, and I noticed Nosler is custom loading for the thing at 42.00 a 20  40gr. and 55 gr. are the current offering except Nosler is a 52 gr match. Brass is currently offered by winchester, remington and Norma. Although I have noticed that Norma no longer catalogs ammuniton in this caliber, and the last price I saw was 99.99 per 100. :(

Hope this helps Enjoy your swift, I do :D

Bart,

From your location I was wondering if you're a 'smithy student?

The Dr. said it well. You might also do a search on the Swift and read the various posts. Once you've done that, ask your specific questions.

The quote from Carmichael says it well too.

Just don't take it as your only rifle in those dog towns out east of you!

Good shooting!
