Dose anybody have any info/experience with this cartridge? I found it in an old Gun Digest and thought it might be interesting for Long range hunting/ 1000 yd BR/F-class. Any thoughts??????????
I have a 220 Jaybird with an 8 twist barrel and shoot 75 grain AMAX bullets out of it at 3400 fps. It is a great caliber for Eastern groundhogs out to 700 or 800 yards. At 3400 fps, the bullets are very explosive.
The cases are easily formed from 308 cases. If you use a couple steps, you can turn 308 cases into 220 Jaybird cases that are very close to fired cases. Basically, you are necking the case down and inceasing the shoulder angle but the actual neck/shoulder junction is about the same so you can headspace off the shoulder.
I never shot it at 1000 yards on paper but I doubt it would be competitive. The heavier 80 and 90 grain bullets would be better for paper targets at 1000 yards but, even with them, you would not be competitive in a 1000 yard match in my opinion.
I believe Jim Carmichael did most of the design & testing for this. Maybe Jarett was involved; he sure built a number of rifles on the chambering.
.22's have won some matches at Hawks Ridge, and for a brief period a .22 Middlestead held the 5-shot small-group record, but historically .22s haven't faired well. In fairness, they also haven't been tried that much, but when tried, and by good competitors, they haven't held up.
Wildcat Cartridges Volume # 2--Has a very good article or chapter I should say on this catridge. It was authored by Layne Simpson and he gives load data for it.He's using a Remington 40x with 26" Hart barell.Highest velocity with 69 gr.smk was 3654 fps.H4831 was the powder.
