22 BR or 6 BR ???

I can't decide which one for shooting P-Dogs at under 600 yds..Mike Bryant is waiting for me to decide,,so any help would be great..

This one's easy. 6 br for sure. Go with a 14" twist and shoot 55 grain bullets. It will push them faster than the 22 br will and do so with better barrel life and a higher bc. And you won't have to neck down brass a caliber.:)


Or if you decide to go with a faster twist to shoot heavier bullets, the 6 will still get the nod.

Think of it like "12ga or 16ga?"

In short, the 6BR does EVERYTHING the 22BR does......... better.

I have both the 22 and 6mmBR. For prairie dogs it isn't even close.........the 20BR wins. I have six 20BR's that will go to SD this May, along with some 204's, the other BR's will stay home and continue to punch paper and coyotes.
 
I've got'em both as well and in shooting prairie dogs side by side in Montana after the first day nobody wanted to use the 22 in the wind.

Absolutely!

.243 55 grain Nosler BT=.276 ballistic coefficient
.224 55 grain Nosler BT=.267 ballistic coefficient


22br maxed out will go 3800 and often shoots better around 3700.
6 br will quite easily achieve 3800, and pushed can do 3900+.

Barrel life will be one caliber higher with the 6 (better gas expansion ratios) and recoil will be nearly the same.

Not to mention that if it's going to be used for p-dogs, lots of brass will probably be used and the 22 br requires necking down. That will take quite a bit of extra time that could be spent shooting if kept a 6.

I'm all about hot rods (where necessary) but to me, I'd keep the high volume guns (prairie dogs and ground squirrel guns) simple and low maintenance and leave the hot rods for the much lower volume guns like coyote rifles.;)

Well I chose the 22 BR Hart #5 with 14 twist..I want to thank all for the help...

Fred, Mike built a 250 Savage for me 2 years ago, and yes he is TOP NOTCH both in quality and as a person..

6BR / 22BR .........Can't go wrong, just pick one and ALL's good.................................

Well., it's kinda like which girl you dated last. She's usually the best until the next one comes along. But I always preferred dating the 6BR - for all the reasons previously stated.
 
22 vs 6BR

Consider this, do you see any 22's winning benchrest matches 100yd/200yd, or on the long range 300, 600, 1000 yd matches-nope. I have one of Mike Bryants guns, bought on BR Classified, Remington action came with a 6BR barrel on it with a 22BR extra, btw he does excellent work, I have not put the 22 on to try it. I had previously built a 22BR on a Mauser action and it shoots good but not as good as the 6. I will point out the guns are for two different venues. The Bryant gun is set up for long distance, both barrels are 8 twist, but the 6 does shoot 87 gr Hornady V-max very well. The 22 Mauser has a 10 twist and shoots 52gr, just about any make, but likes Berger and Eubers best.
 
22br

I have a Remington VSSF that came into the world as a 22-250. I had Billy Stevens put a 14 twist HV Krieger barrel on it and chamber it in 22BR. I shot my first sanctioned benchrest match with this rifle, and it shot a .390 group at 200 yards during that match. I use Brady Knight's 52 grain benchrest bullets in it, and it spits them out at 3,750 FPS. I use H322 in it when shooting targets and Winchester 748 when shooting prairie dogs. Good luck with your new toy. I think you'll really enjoy it. My farthest prairie dog with this particular rifle is 520 yards. Funny thing about that dog: When we got to the PD, we were going to laser back to the truck to check the distance, and a rattle snake had staked its claim to my dog and wasn't going to give it up until my buddy convinced him with a well placed 45 ACP.
