1000 yard Bullet head?

Hi all what bullet head do you use in your 308s to get to 1000 yards? Iv been using the 175gn sierra HPBT match but im still playing with powders so im not quiet there yet, I would like to use 168gn or 178gn A-max bullet heads but have been told that these may not be good enough to get me out to 1000? I would also appreciate your recommendations for powder options to get me out there.

Worked for me...

In the Texas State F class match in 1995, I had good luck with 46gr of Varget behind a 180gr Nosler Ballistic Tip. Primer was CCI BR2's. This was my most accurate 308 load. Shot three X's at a 1000yds in one match. The rifle would group about 8" at 1000. Probably less if it had a better driver behind it.

There is little use of the .308 Winchester in benchrest, and almost zero for 1,000 yard competitions. You see it used occasionally at 600 yards, but the smaller 6mm is far, far more common.

Better for you would be a forum that specialized in (International) Palma competition. F-class (T/R) comes as close as you can find on BR Central; here is the link:

Hi Virg thanks for the reply I will give the A-max a try then if you had good results with the ballistic tips, the only powder I have for now is elcho 17 but a friend highly recommended varget so if I can get any I will give it a go.

Back in my high power days....I shot 47.0 grains of Varget, RWS primers, Lapua brass, and Sierra 190 Matchkings on my .308 Remington action bolt gun. It was a stiff load but the 190's sure shot great. Yes, the charge was 47.0 grains of Varget. A door bell buzzer was used to suck the powder down so that I could seat the 190's to jam length. I would experience about two primers that would drop out (out of one relay's worth of shooting). I can remember Bruce Schlemmer standing behind me as I was shooting a 600 yard stage. After I was done he asked me out loud 'What the hell are you shooting'? I know that he didn't believe me when I told him. Those were the good ole days!

Thanks for that im not sure if my 1-12 will stabilize the 190's but I am trying to get hold of some 185gn to try and I just as well get some 190's to see how my rifle shoots them, at the moment I cant get any varget so I am having to use elcho 17 and im doing my first load development with it on Wednesday with the 175gn sierra HPBT match.

Try the 168 Berger Hybrid in your 12 twist barrel, they have better BC than the 175 SMKs and you can launch them faster than the 175s. The 168 Berger Hybrids has much less bearing surface than the 175. I am launching these 168s B H through my match prepped M1a set up for 1000 yard matches using the old forgotten powder, the IMR 4320.
