    GREAT Gunsmith Lather FS

Hi Mike, I did two things to my Jet 12-36 BD lathe New head bearings and converted to DC motor drive. Zero issues with chatter. It is a fantastic machine Added an outboard DC drive for the apron and a digital read out and digital RPM control You can see and read about all the modifications...

    GREAT Gunsmith Lather FS

Not mine, but I have one exactly like it. This is my third lathe and I've never found one better for general gunsmithing. Short headstock for through the headstock barrel work Large spindle hole (I think 1.5") I've never had an issue where it wasn't large enough. Belt drive so very forgiving...

6 jaw set-tru chuck Why doesn't Butch use it?

I have a Tru-Adjust 6 jaw for regular work and a 4 jaw Tru-Adjust for octagon barrels. No way I'd want to go back to standard chucks. I can align a bore in about 20 seconds with either of these chucks. Thick copper rings are used to not bind the barrel and a spider on the outboard side...

    alinwa----Chambering Short Barrels

I just watched these videos.....Did Gordy really indicate off a woodworkers spring clamp to set headspace? And did he stop the lathe with the reamer still in the barrel? And a HUGE chuck like that can distort the barrel with all that clamping force. A Tru-Adjust would be a much better choice...

    Brass Annealing Machine..DONE!

Hi Phil, Lots of debate on the Cast Bullet Forum about rotating brass. But with two torches and the Bernoulli principle at work, I don't see the need. The brass anneals very evenly. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bernoulli%27s_principle

    chamber problem

So let me get this straight.........You fire a round in a newly barrelled rifle, and you need to "hammer" the bolt open. So you proceed to fire another round with the same results.........................AND THEN YOU FIRE THREE MORE!!!.....Yikes! I had this happen on a 223 Ackley I had built...

    Lathe question

Evertime a thread like this comes up I offer a bunch of questions: How "good" is good enough for gunsmithing? Do you want to build guns or rebuild machine tools? Do you have any idea what to look for in a used lathe? Do you have the expertise to rebuild a machine tool? Are you prepared to...

Barrel Fluting with regards to accuracy?

Spiral fluting will absolutely weaken a barrel (make it less stiff). Try supporting weight with a twisted I-beam. A spiral fluted barrel will have very close to the stifness of a straight barrel of the minor diameter. I totally don't understand sriral flutting other than for appearance. I...

    Barrel liner installations?????

I have a Winchester 1873 that I'm going to line the barrel. It is 38-40 and I'm going to keep it the same cartridge. I love the idea of chambering the barrel liner to the rim before installing and them installing using a case as a headspace gauge. Brilliant! My question....Do you do the...

    "Gunsmithing " steel ????

Brownells used to sell small bars of a particular type of steel that machined beautifully and blued very nicely with cold blues. I had a few pieces of it that I used to make sights, bases and other small parts. Anyone know what type of steel this was and/or can you recommend they type of steel...
