    bench building 101

Skeetlee, there are lots of benches out there built on half blocks and within a few years they are moving. If you have room for half blocks, there is room for full blocks. Build it in a tee shape and fill them. you won't regret it. Better yet, make a form and pour the tee solid with re-bar. It...

    What brand/model of loading press?

I have 1/2 dozen rock chuckers, some set up for bullet making, some not. For sizing BR cases, I use the old RCBS JR. its no longer made, but you can buy them for a song. Very solid, just shorten the handle. Heck some old guy gave me the last one since he was upgrading. Ditto with AL on the...

    30br vs 6ppc

Yup, everyone in a marathon should wear the same size shoes. Progresive liberalism at its best

    6br/brx turn v no-turn

When a bushing die body is made, the process calls for maching at one end then more maching at the other. being made on a production level, its nearly impossible to have both ends on the same centerline axis. Now the cavity which holds the bushing need not be on the same axis, because we have...

    Federal 30 american brass

I made one and it was shot way back when Dave Brennen inspired a fun gun class shot at the beginning of the super shoot . We called it the 220 M&K. It did win that in a mauser action and a chromoly barrel with 28.5 grs of 4895. Case capacity was identical to the ppc. Jim Stekl had a 30-30...

Lapping and polishing a Barrel Crown

Anneal a ball bearing. Its easier to control with fingers since it won't be flopping around. When one side begins to wear, just move to the other side of the ball

    6br/brx turn v no-turn

Charles, my point was not well stated. I should have said, that I would prefer a true bushing and die with 1/2 thou variation in brass than perfect necks and a crooked bushing/ die . Nearly every bushing die I have has required some work and about 1 bushing in 5 are true.

    6br/brx turn v no-turn

Add a crooked bushing to nicely turned and uniform necks, and your runout can exceed what the runout is in no turn necks. There are lots of crooked bushings out there.

    change scope, change vibrational characteristic?

I was quite surprised once to see how little it takes to make an action flex. This of course changes bedding. The transition from a weaver to a nightforce would require ring changes and possible alignment issues. So not only might the balance be altered, but stress induced. The nightforce would...

an open message on the real cost of the national debt....

Our system is actually a machine which feeds itself. Job justification at its best. If any one dept of the government solved all its problems, it would no longer be needed. Same can be said for any person in politics. This machine is as close to perpetual motion as possible. Now consider that...

    Update on barrel cleaners

First, I'm not on Iosso's payroll, I just use it. That said, Today I was trying to clean up a set of Kelbly rings. Soaked in Brake cleaner and MEK. That failing, I used a old toothbrush and Iosso. Worked great, never shined them at all, just removed the stuff that discolors the bead...

    30 wssm ?

Pete, I made one just as you describe a few years ago. I think it had potential, but not without problems. When its all said and done, its nothing but a brand new 308. Issues with the thicker brass may be resolved, but I didn't feel it was user friendly. Once completed, I shot...

    Loading a mill

My bridgeport was in a flood so it needed all new bearings. Within a day of the flood, I took it apart and hauled it home in pieces. Actually pretty straight forward. I did take the table off and that allowed the base to haul easy in a pick up.

    Carbon ring on shoulder

I have had this happen, generally not with new brass. Also have noticed it more with some barrels. I don't think its the brass as much as the barrel. It could be one that just needs a faster powder to make the case seal. Very light loads can do it as well as say 4350 in a 222, just to slow for...

GemPro 250 or RCBS 10-10 scale?

The electronic scales just haven't worked out for me, An acculab just wanders. I have tried it in 4-5 different environments and it just keeps on. Now I bought a small loading bench job $100 bucks style and actually came to believe it. Then at one point, I decided that I'd check everything...

    Leupold scope

XBBR sent this to me a couple weeks ago, it is well worth reading. Up to that point, I was having some issues with side focus and recticle focus. Now that its understood, I have been able to adjust correctly

    bushing bolt

Tod, I would think that the 6XC would be a bit better on barrel life than a 6mm Rem. For that matter a bit better barrel life might be a 6XC case with the neck expanded to 6.5. As the body diensions are less than .060 longer than a 6.5 Lapua The chamber might be done with a...

Need help setting up a die

You Know BS just perpetuates itself and soon becomes fact. I was having trouble finding a bushing that was marked correctly , so couldn't get the neck tension I wanted on a 6.5 X 47. I made an expander button to fit my decapping rod. Now, I was not changing things a lot, maybe 1/2 thou. My...
