    Hey Kent !?!?

Wowsers - now that's taking a new approach for sure. I think even Varmint Al might have a tough time modeling the elastic behavior of that setup. Here's something to ponder - the "stiff rod" in your diagram, what should it be made of? "Stiffness" is essentially Young's modulus (stress over...

    Hey Kent !?!?

The action of a Jaw Harp (or Jew's Harp) is much more applicable to modeling the behavior of a rifle barrel than a guitar string. The fact that a guitar string is supported equally on both ends and is held under tension has a lot to do with its vibratory behavior. (Essentially a pre-stressed...

Really could use help..CZ 452 Varmit or American ?

For what it's worth, I have a 452 Varmint which has had the original "barrel lug" removed. The lug has been re-posistioned to the rear of the action and welded to the underside of the tang, similar to the American but welded in place. I can't swear that it shoots any better in this location...

    i found this today.

Hopefully Wilbur will delete this thread before it gets too far along. There are many problems with the information presented in that article, particularly as related to the field of "mechanics of materials". The behavior of steel crystal lattices, beams, and structures are well understood...

    Manufactoring license???????????

Tax revenue is the goal here, not keeping unbarrelled target actions out of the hands of criminals.

In the Silhouette shooting world, this "one gun" phenomena has been developing for a few years. A lot of shooters use their Hunter guns in both classes (hunter and standard), The hunter guns are usually just as accurate as the standard rifles. The absolute level of precision is not as high...

Is it correct that a counterbored muzzle is permitted in the sporter class (in order to function as an integrated tuner)? SteveM

    Manufactoring license???????????

I have understood the situation all along. I didn't want to accuse the Wisconsin poster of anything suspicious, but it seems that he may have been trying to circumnavigate the ATF "recommendation" to the action manufacturer. I think that the ATF wants the new action to be handled only by...

    Manufactoring license???????????

If the original poster is correct, the ATF is telling the action maker that he (the action maker) cannot ship the action to anyone who is not another manufacturer. The problem is not the ATF telling the buyer that he can't buy it, they are telling the action maker that the action maker can only...

    Manufactoring license???????????

Correct understanding. I don't know the specifics of this case, but it sounds like the original poster is saying something like this... Please correct me if I'm wrong. The original poster wants to buy a pre-made action from somebody like Hall, Turbo, Panda, ULA etc. (not saying that any of...

    Manufactoring license???????????

I think we can all see why a gunsmith without a manufacturing license (and charging his customers the excise tax) might be very hesitant to take delivery of an action, build it into a completed rifle, and then sell it to someone. As per the original poster, at least one custom action...

    Manufactoring license???????????

The phrase "drop in" is defined in the .pdf provided by Madrox. A “drop in” replacement part is one that can be installed in or on an existing, fully assembled firearm (not solely a frame or receiver) without drilling, cutting, or machining.

    Manufactoring license???????????

I think this is the full article. George, while we may agree on the fundamental definitions of assembly and manufacturing, you probably don't want to argue with the ATF in a Federal courtroom. Caution - interpret the following at your own risk. Text of File: U.S. Department of Justice Bureau...

    Manufactoring license???????????

Here's an excerpt from the original .pdf file. The link to the original .pdf is dead now. Hopefully someone has the entire article. http://www.atf.gov/firearms/firearmstech/081508manufacturing-of-firearms.pdf 8. A gunsmith regularly buys military-type firearms, Mausers, etc., and...

    Manufactoring license???????????

Be Careful. Be Careful guys. Be careful about the recommendations being passed around here. Running afoul of the ATF or the IRS is not a good thing. In fact, I think some of the members here are admitted "Feds". Know the laws and follow them carefully.

    Manufactoring license???????????

Link to ATF ruling? There used to be a .pdf file on ATF's website which outlined the new regulations as of 8/15/08. I can't find the link now, but it spelled out pretty exactly what kind of work constituted "manufacturing". The ATF's definition of manufacturing didn't match what you might...

    Manufactoring license???????????

Is there a database of "licensed manufacturers" available through BATFE? Maybe they can provide a list of approved "manufacturers" in your area that can help with your project. SteveM
