I found the barrel calculator in the Gunsmith section and that clears up how much more the barrel would weigh. Looks like 6oz heavier for a 26" Hunter #19 and 1.2 lbs for the 26" LV contour over the current .30 cal barrel. Still don't know what that means to the balance point though.

I've trued several chucks by using a tool post grinder. I can't imagine the beating the interrupted cut on hardened jaws would create. The key to good results is loading the jaws and as long as they are relatively tight in their keyways (and scroll on a 3 jaw is decent) it is worth doing IMO...

Thanks. That was my line of thinking as well but wanted to make sure. Most Palma shooters still use tight bore barrels even though there is not an undersize bullet issue anymore, and they tend to shoot really well. Greg

What bore dimensions are folks using for the 30BR? Standard .300/.308 or a tight bore .298/.307 like the Palma shooters typically use? I know why the Palma guys use the tight bore, but I'm building a 30BR and want to use what is working the best. Greg

The Federal should work OK as long as you stay away from top end pressures. I don't know if it is still the case, but the .308 and .223 brass used to be notorious for primer pockets loosening after one or two reloads. The .223 has been improved, so maybe the .308 isn't so bad anymore.

Many/most of the long rifles had the muzzle threaded for a blank firing device for use with wooden bullets I think. Hate to be next to one of them with the splinters flying.
