Please advise SS material for barrel nut

I just made one out of a drop of 4140 so i could put it together right away, worked great. I'm still going to use some 17-4 drop when I have time to take it to work and heat treat it to the suggested hardness. Thanks all this has been helpful to me. Seems I should know more about 17-4 with...

    Ultimate front spider.

I used some 3/8-24 set screws 1.5 long and turned a full radius on one end then used a ball mill to cut same radius in some .500 alluminum bar stock and part them off about .200 long for my spider. Worked very good. can adjust easy and they pivot great without putting a bind in the barrel. I...

Please advise SS material for barrel nut

So if I had my 17-4 heat treated to say 25-35 RC it would be OK ,or just use a piece of 4140 Would I need to heat treat one made out of 416 stainless?

Please advise SS material for barrel nut

17-4 would start out at about Rc35 I think but not sure how good it would be at lower Temps. Don't think I would be draging this one out at ten below but you never know

Please advise SS material for barrel nut

No I didn't think there would be a need to although i could . 17-4 seems tough and I didn't think I would want it to be to hard as it would be supporting the barrel were the chaimber is , giving added strength. What do you think? Something I have been thinking about last couple days.

Full length sized brass does not fit

I haven't been happy with many methods till I made a heavy duty barrel vise. and I found copper sheet works good for holding and protecting barrels and actions. or I cut a strip of Pepsi carton and us that. And for the Mauser I cut a hole the shape of the receiver head in a piece of alluminum...

Full length sized brass does not fit

Does that rifles barrel have a very faint engraving on the top about 8" from chaimber telling of maker PO Ackley and we're work was done? I remember a interarms that I had for a while that was a 7mm rem mag that was a Ackley rifle and the chaimber had a radius at the shoulder to neck junction...

    Finished my Long Range Project.

So true I ask and watch all I can and try many ways. And make my methods from that and my experience machining in job shops through the years. This reminds me of a boss I had once I was feeling like he might be getting tiered of me asking questions all the time and asked him if he was and he...

found a new way to be hard on my lathe tonite....

Alinwa a method I used when I got a drill with the morse taper that had to short of a flat or sheared off flat was to put a Allen wrench in the back of the slot so my drift key would gain that last little bit of purchase and pop it loose. It always works if there is something left that the drift...

    Taiwan lathe spindle runout

I check both ways same results. running there is more vibration but with many years of dialing in parts you learn what your getting. I just finished a 7 saum with dialed in muzzle and throat to .0002 then used an expensive floating reamer holder and the chamber was getting belled. couldn't get...

    Barrel Profiling

I offset my tailstock and use a high feed rate with slow speed about 170 rpm to 300 rpm till I am almost to finish size then slow rpm down to 120 to 70 rpm and slow the feed rate back down maybe 5 ipm for the finish pass. Through the whole process I follow the tool post with a 2pound piece of...

Dialing a prechambered barrel in for shortening

Thanks I do have a tendency to overthink things . I guess I get a little OCD about machining. I figured it would be just fine getting the muzzle and throat within .0002 and then crown
